History of the "Pentecostal/Holiness Church"

History of the "Pentecostal Church"

Characterized by vibrant music, dancing and homiletics (studious preaching skills).  Pentecostalism is the fastest growing christian "sect" in the world.  Pentecostals believe in sanctification after receiving Christ's gift of salvation  as the only way of life for the born again believer.  After sanctification one must be filled with the Holy Ghost "FIRE BAPTIZED"  in order to continue successfully on this christan journey in THE WAY, the way of holiness.  That along with evidence of speaking in tounges and other spiritual gifts described by the great Apostle Paul in I Corinthians Chapter 12.  Read below about great leaders and achievments of the church that Jesus built!

Jesus Christ (Yeshua Ha Masheauch)

Jesus Christ (Yeshua Ha Masheauhk) -

(Born Circa any where from 8 or 4 BC TO 3 AD, OR 0 AD) Greatest of all historical figuresof all times.  He left an impact on the world so much so that his arrival divided the ages into BC before Christ and AD Anno Domini, which is Latin for "in the year of our Lord."

Described in Hebrews 12:2 as the "author and finisher of our faith", he is truly and ultimately the founder of our movement.  He used the term the church (ecclasias a greek word meaning called out ones) to describe his "body of belivers".  He himself was a pious Jew living in a region called Nazareth in Galilee in Jerusalem..  He is seen attending temple services at a local synagouge in Luke 4:16-32.  His mission to seek and to save that which was lost began as he was baptized in the Jordan river by his cousin, John the Baptist*.  In this dramatic sceen the Holy Ghost anointed him for his purpose by gently resting on him as a beautiful snow white dove would land on a tree limb.  Then the earth shook with what was thought to be an earth quake.  But it was none other than the voice of our Heavenly Father aproving of him saying " This is my beloved son in whom I am well pleased."    He went on to heal the sick and to raise the dead.  He eventually suffered rejection from his people and death by crucifixion.

He was sentenced to death by crucifixion because they said that he was King of the Jews. In a land ruled by the Romans that was punishable by death in order to prevent uprisings and assassinations of the current emperor, which was quite common. The Roman government had been made fully aware of Jesus prophesies and biblical fortellings of his resurrection. So the local governor Caesar Augustus told his solders to guard his tomb. If anything happens lie and say his body was stolen. So a series of lies were created that have been used by Satan until this day to blind people to the truth. However…

by the power of the Holy Ghost he rose after being dead for three days. And walked the earth in his glorified body.  He preached again to his disciples and others on the earth he then gave the Great Commision in Mark 16, the greatest sermon ever performed on a cloud as he ascended to heaven.  This is  describe in Acts chapter 1 as well.  He ended his sermon by saying that "You will receive power after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you"  (Acts 1:8).  And he did just that as is read in Acts chapter 2.  He is the Alpha and the Omega described through out Revelation.  Seen in Revelation chapter one with a countenance or apperance as the color of brass, His face shninning briter than the sun and his hair like lambs wool.  King Jesus will return again for his creation.  But only for those who prepared themselves in "The Way", the way of holiness.  As it is written be ye holy for I am holy.

Apostle Peter  - A fisherman by trade and pious jew.  Follower of Jesus Christ called while at work on his boat with his brother Andrew.  Became the close associate of Jesus.  Writer of 2 books in the New Testement.  Gave the first post pentecost sermon acts 2:14

Suffered the same fate of his leader Christ Jesus crucifixion by having it implied that Jesus Christ is King of the Jews. Upon his request he was crucified upside down because he felt himself to be unworthy to suffer the same fate of his leader. Knowing by faith that he will live again. We salute the Apostle Peter the first Bishop of the Church or Body of Christ.

Jordan River where John the Baptist baptized many
Present day Jordan River where Jesus was Baptized by John the Baptist.

John the Baptist – forerunner of Jesus Christ. Powerful evangelist who preached the coming messiah saying "repent for the kingdom of heaven is at hand". Meaning don’t wait till later this spiritual kingdom exists right now. Gathering disciples and having the honor of baptizing and anointing Christ Jesus. Proved that God’s spirit had moved again into a new dispensation like in the days of Moses. Though he himself was not ordained in the Synagogue like his father the priest named Zechariah. John the Baptist the first Pentecostal evangelist suffered beheading by the jealous King Herod. Will rise again to evangelize the final coming of the Messiah as onE of the two witnesses as described in Revelation *.

"I indeed baptize you with water unto repentance:  but he that cometh after me is mightier than I, whose shoes I am not worthy to bear:  he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost and with fire..." - John the Baptist

Matthew 3:11

Put on the Whole Armor of God - Ephesians 6:10

Apostle Paul -

Tentmaker and leather tanner

A zealot Jew who killed Christians believing they were blaspheming God. While out patrolling and looking for insurrectionist he was knocked from his horse and converted and evangelized by King Jesus himself. The incident left him mildly blinded. (But heavily anointed.) This well educated well bread man was born half Jew and half Greek. Having studied Greek education and philosophy in addition to Jewish laws as he boast of in Phillipians 4. But he counted all nothing as it says in the later part of the Chapter in comparison to have the power of Christ inside that gives him strength.  That is the infamous:

"I can do all things through Christ which strengthens me."  Phillipians 4:13

It is apparent that he used his education to his advantage being the writer of 5 books in the New Testament and to this day he is the most read author in the world. Once it was recorded that he preached for a very long time and a man went to sleep and ell out of the window and died. The Apostle Paul then laid hands on him and raised him from the dead perfectly restored. Pentecostal power.

As is well known, the church suffered severe persecution via the hands of the Roman Empire.  However the apostles got there job done. Evangelizing Russia, India, Africa what is know known as the Baltic states, Spain, and etc.  However the church was scattered and small groups continued to uphold the truth of Jesus and uphold his command to seek the infilling of the Holy Ghost and to operate in his power.  Next we will discuss some of those groups cited in history.

The 12 – The initial apostles called by Jesus.  Many of whom died of crucifixion. But did as was told they preached the gospel throughout the known world. Healing the sick speaking in tongues, filling and being filled with the Holy Ghost.

Martin Luther a German Catholic priest  began to preach against the discrepancies of the government controlled church imposed upon his people. Most people did not know what the bible said because of illiteracy. Artist like Michaelangelo painted pictures to describe the bible to the people. In addition to that their church services were conducted in Latin a language spoken by the social elite in certain areas. On October 31, 1517 he wrote the 95 thesis.  This began the Reformation period in medieval times. Initially the thesis’ aim was to bring reform to the Catholic Church. He was excommunicated from the church. He continued to minister truth and to inform people of the present ills in the Catholic Church. Some one attempted to murder him that forced him  to go into hidding.  While in hiding he translated the New Testament from the Greek into German. He later went on to write several evangelistic tracks and great hymns including the ver popular and loved hymn " A Mighty Fortress is Our God".  He established churches ordaining ministers permitting them to marry and etc. The movement resulted in the development of the Lutheran Church and other Protestant churches. (Though Martin Luther himself did not call his "network of followers" the Luteran Church).  Others sought to have the bible in there own language including the Church of England the Anglican Church. Out of the Anglican Church came a movement towards holiness like that of the first apostles by a man named Jonathan Wesley and his brother Charles Wesley. This new holiness movement was evangelized by himself and his brother from England to the US resulted in the Methodist Church. (Here again Wesley himself did not officially name his network the "Methodist Church", but he remained a faithful and loyal member of the Church of England.  Sometime after his death his followers developed the seperate denomination.)  He used the term Second blessing to describe receiving the Holy Ghost. He held his first annual church conference in 1744.

The holiness movement in America resulted in several holiness/Pentecostal churches and revivals. For example at Yale University and Harvard University there were people who claimed to be filled with the Holy Ghost with evidence of speaking in tongues.

Azusa Street Revival 1906 – 1908 held in Los Angeles, California by a Louisiana born minister William J. Seymour. Turned many back to holiness and what many believe as the new beginning of Pentecost. Resulted in several Pentecostal churches like...

The Church of God in Christ. It was actually established in 1899 by Pastor Charles H. Mason (1866 - 1961). He was a Baptist minister holding a revival upholding the doctrine of sanctification. This resulted in he and his followers being kicked out of the Baptist church. Later after attending the Azusa street revival in 1907 he added the belief of being filled with the Holy Ghost with evidence of speaking in tongues. He was seeking for the passionate and soul steering services he had attended as a child with regular people meeting outside. So he started this body of believers that today has over 5 million members internationally. He ordained over 300 white ministers. But after racial disharmony occurred and it being brought to light that laws still existed in America prohibiting a black man from being a spiritual leader of a white man there was a church split which resulted in the development of the Assemblies of God. *The COGIC headquarters in Memphis, Tennessee, One Mason Temple was were The Revered Dr. Martin Luther King gave his final sermon "I’ve Been To The Mountain Top" on April 3, 1968.

Apostolic Pentecostals – the Jesus only movement that strictly enforces that Jesus is God and that prayers and baptisms should be performed in his name only.

Fire Baptized Holiness

And countless others

More recently this fervent Pentecostal preaching can be seen in the likes of

Bishop Carlton Pearson – From the Church of God in Christ. Attended Oral Roberts University started his own ministry and began pastoring at the age of 28.  He now has his own network of churches with thousands of members worldwide. Has the Annual Azusa Conference/Revival at his home church, Higher Dimensions Family Church in Oklahoma.  Coined the phrase "You can be emotional without being spiritual, but you can't be spiritual without being emotional!"   That was his reply when asked about the  exuberant and roaring activities involved in pentecostal worship services. By his starting the Azusa Revival again he influenced the nations greatly.  He is often quoted and consulted.  He is also credited for the renewed interest in the 1980s for praise and worship thruout all christiandom.  Bringing to us the likes of Carmen, Gary Oliver and many others.  One of the most influential modern African-American Pentecostals the Apostle, Bishop Carlton Pearson.

Pastor Benny Hinn – born of Arab and Jewish desent in Joppa, Israel became a disciple of Kathryn Culman’s ministry in Canada as a teenager. He experienced the in dwelling of the Holy Ghost in his home after attending one of her services. . His family moved to Florida he founded Orlando Christian Center one of the largest churches in Florida. He evangelizes the world through tours, confences  and his daily television show "This is Your Day." His services are characterized with many healing reports.  Charismatic Pentecostal Power.

Pastor Rod Parsley – Started his own church at the age of 19 in his back yard in Cleveland, Ohio. His mega church now has 12,000 members. Pentecostal fire preaching!

Bishop T.D. Jakes –  A former member of the Apostolic church fine-tuned his ministry by preaching and ministering to his self and to a small 10 member store front church. His small church boomed after he began a Sunday school series called "Woman Thou art Loosed."   That Charleston, West Virginia church boomed to 30,000 members. He was lead of the LORD to relocate to Dallas Texas to form the Potter’s House that church boast of over 40, 000 members. In addition to his network of churches under his tutelage through out the world.

Bishop Paul S. Morton -  A member of the Church of God in Christ was such a profound preacher he was asked by a Baptist church to take over as pastor. Still holding his fundamental Pentecostal beliefs, he was permitted to form the Full Gospel Network by the Baptist organization in 1993. The Full Gospel Baptist Church Fellowship now boasts of 2,500 congregations worldwide. His own church has ovner 18,000 members.

These and countless others usher in the Holy Ghost to bring Jesus to the present world. These services are colored with music by these Bishops and others like the Mississippi Mass Choir with James Moore leading "God Don’t Need No Matches! He’s fire by himself". Fred Hammond "Jesus Is", and "Glory to God", Kirk Franklin "The Reason Why I Sing" and "Stomp", Mary Mary with "Shackles", Maranatha "I could sing of your Love Forever", and "As the Deer" and Hillsong "Jesus Lover of My Soul", West Angeles Church of God in Christ’s version of "Jesus I’ll Never Forget", Donnie Mclirkins "We Fall Down" and his version of "Living He Loved Me" Karen Clark Sheards and Donald Lawrences "God is Holy", Pastor Hezekiah Walker "Power Belongs to God". These are reminiscent of Pastor Shireley Ceasar "I Feel Like Praising Him", Clara Ward's "Sweepen through the City", and Thomas Dorsey's  "Precious Lord." As well as Negro spirituals like "Joshua Fought the Battle of Jericho", "When the Saints Go Marching In", and "Jesus is a Rock in a Weary Land."  And again many others.

This is the movement that shall be until he comes. As in the manner of King David who danced with all his might as he brought the Ark of the Covenant back to Jerusalem (II Samuel 6:14). And he prepared his son to build the First Temple to worship God in. The Temple was opened and dedicated by his son King Solomon (I Chronicles 28 - II Chronicles 8). They prepared singers, dancers, and instrumentalist in addition to incenses and other offerings. The place was so filled with the Holy Ghost that when the priest entered in and began to minister they could barely stand up. Now God has made his tabernacle with men. We can be filled with the Holy Ghost just like the Temple that the Great King Solomon built that was prepared by his father King David.  Note that in both passages after King David and King Solomon prayed the fire of God fell from heaven to consume the sacrifice.  That is symbolic of what happens in our services and the lives of  certain individuals today in the spirit.

This Holy Ghost fire is foreshadowed in God's burning of the sacrificial lamb in the first sacrifice ceremony performed for the fallen man Adam. Again Jesus, the Holy Ghost and The Heavenly Father - Elohim saved, sanctifed and "fire baptised" so that he can have a people who want to be with him out of pure love and dedication. It is about Immanual that is the Messiah making it so that God is with us and fills us with His Holy Ghost.  That’s Pentecostalism.

"For our God is a consuming Fire"
