It is well known but often overlooked that the God that we proclaim to be the Creator of Heaven and earth is the God of the Hebrews.

God, an English word is often used to describe many other beings and forces. If you proclaim yourself to be "Christian" the reality is that God has a name. In fact Hebrews have 92 names that are commonly used to describe God. The Hebrew language developed from Aramaic and other colloquialism in the Middle East. The significance of the language is that it is what is commonly referred to as a covenant language. Meaning most words and phrases exalt God. Thus it is the official language of the Kingdom. It is a sacred language. We come to that conclusion based on the original language and native lands in the text that we use commonly referred to as the Bible in Hebrew Ha Tanak (The Holy Scriptures). Plain and simple knowing God's name(s) is knowing God. That is because it describes his "personality(s)". The skillful use of that knowledge indicates that there may be a close personal relationship with him. Which is the importance of this article.

I.  About the Names of God

II.  More on the Personalities of God.

I. About the Names of God

Elhym - (Pronounced El o he-yeem or Allah-heem) occurs first in Genesis1: 1. It appears in the Holy Scriptures 2249 times.

YWHW commonly pronounced Yahweh, Jehovah and Jehovah. Proper pronunciation Yehova. (This variation in pronunciation in this word and many others is due to the lake of vowels in the ancient Hebrew language. As we know here in the U.S. pronunciation of a word may vary from region to region with in the boarders of the same country). YWHW first revealed in Exodus 3:14. It occurs in the Holy Scriptures 5521 times. From it we get a shortened form that was commonly used around the time of King David's reign - JAH (Psalm 68:4). And the common combination ADONIJAH.

ADONAI - Lord. Appears 419 times.

EL or AL (pronounced "L") first appears in Genesis 14:18. Occurs 235 times.

Allhh - (Aramaic) pronounced El-aw or Allah, occurs in Hebrew text 78 times. Psalm 22:1, Ezra 5:1, and Daniel 2:18.

El Shaddai - The God of more than enough, supplier of all needs, Almighty, literally The God that is the multi-breasted one. Genesis 17:1.

The rest are a combination of those names along with descriptive words of "God's" character or personality.

For example:

  • YWHWYirah - commonly pronounced Jehovah Jirah - The Lord God our provider. Genesis 22:14.
  • YWHWShalom - Jehovah Shalom. Lord God of Peace.
*Some will say that these should be or could be Adonai Elohim Yirah, which actually means Lord God Provider. So those combinations can be used also.

Here are some other examples:

  • Elohim Chayim - Living God
  • Eloheinu Avram, Ytzchack, Yaa'kov - God of our Fathers Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.

Elohei Yisrael - The God of Israel.
